Volunteering at Pigs in the Wood Huddersfield

The YP spent the morning volunteering at a pig sanctuary in Huddersfield, see what we did and how we helped.

Volunteering at Pigs in the Wood

On Friday the 19th of July 2024 our team took off our business hats and donned some wellies and volunteered at Pigs in the Wood. Spending the morning sliding about in mud is not a usual Friday for us but let’s just say we were happy as a pig in mud! We are aiming to increase our volunteering and fundraising responsibilities this year and to give back to non-profit organisations across the region. We figured summertime would provide some outdoor opportunities and what a better way to help out than to help rescued animals in Huddersfield.

About Pigs in the Wood

Pigs in the Wood is a non-profit sanctuary for pigs and other animals that have been rescued from various horrendous situations. Based in the village of Scissett, Huddersfield in 10 acres of woodland the pigs roam free and live naturally. The wood is currently home to 20 pigs and several goats and chickens that are cared for by the team. Their team is made up of volunteers who work 7 days a week to ensure the needs of their animal residents are always met.

Their aim is to provide a home for pigs and other animals that have been abused and mistreated. To develop the sanctuary further the organisation needs to raise funding to build shelters for them and for fencing to make the wood more practical and safer for both the residents and visitors. If and when they are unable to take in a new pig, they work tirelessly to rehome them and use their network of contacts to find sanctuary for them.

The Pigs in the Wood team are always on the lookout for fundraisers and volunteers to help maintain the sanctuary, whether it’s feeding and looking after the animals or fixing and maintaining shelters and fencing.

What We Did

We separated into smaller groups to tackle several projects. One group started by filling up all the water buckets so the pigs could stay well hydrated, it was a very hot day. Another team set about cleaning out the chicken coup while others cleaned out the goat huts and filled up their food baskets with fresh hay. Throughout the morning, we rotated and completed several tasks such as clearing out the clogged drains, flattening the ground ready for their music festival, clearing up pig muck and making multiple wheelbarrow trips of old mud and hay. One of the highlights of the day was rubbing sun cream into the sunbathing pigs, they are such sun worshippers, and their poor skin was getting red very quickly in the morning sun, so we covered them all in factor 50. They seemed to really enjoy the cooling effect.

We were all pretty tired after a very physical morning. We have huge admiration for the incredible hard work the Pigs in the Wood team deliver every day of the week. We were so impressed by the care and dedication; it truly inspired us. After a sweaty, muddy morning we were ready to leave our pig friends behind, though we were sad to leave. We’d made some great memories and we hope that the work we provided was helpful and beneficial to the team and their animals.

How you can get involved

Pigs in the Wood are open to visitors and run events throughout the year, they have a live music event in the first week of August that looks fantastic. All money raised goes back into the non-profit to provide care for their residents. You can also offer to volunteer your time and help out just like we did. It was a fantastic opportunity, and we’d highly recommend it.
